TL;DR URGENT

Save North Meridian Ave Shared Use Path

  • A long-approved, Priority 1 bike+ped path on North Meridian Ave is about to be quietly canceled
  • It's on the consent agenda for Feb 25, 2026 — meaning it could pass with zero discussion
  • No community input was sought. Commissioners need to hear from you before Tuesday.

01 — WHAT IS THIS PATH?

North Meridian Avenue runs through Miami Beach's Mid-Beach and North Beach neighborhoods. For years, the city's own Bicycle-Pedestrian Master Plan has designated a shared-use path along this corridor as a Priority 1 project — the highest tier in the city's active transportation planning.

The path would provide a continuous, protected route for cyclists and pedestrians along a corridor that currently lacks safe, separated infrastructure. It would connect existing on-street bike lanes to the north and south — the first truly connected north-south active transportation spine through Mid-Beach.

This isn't a new idea. It has been in the plan for years, vetted through the city's process, and identified as the city's top priority for active transportation investment.

02 — WHAT'S HAPPENING?

On February 18, 2026, the cancellation of the North Meridian Ave Shared Use Path appeared — without notice — on the City Commission's consent agenda for the February 25 meeting.

A consent agenda bundles routine, non-controversial items for a single up-or-down vote. Items receive no individual discussion, no public comment, and no separate vote. Commissioners approve the entire list at once — it typically passes in seconds.

Placing a Priority 1 infrastructure project's cancellation on a consent agenda means it could be killed — permanently — with zero public debate, zero community input, and zero transparency. No hearing was held. No residents were notified. No explanation appears in the agenda materials.

"A Priority 1 project — years in the making — removed from the agenda with no public notice, no hearing, no explanation."

03 — WHY IT MATTERS

Miami Beach has committed to Vision Zero and ambitious active transportation and climate goals. Safe, connected bike and pedestrian infrastructure is central to all of them.

The North Meridian Ave path isn't just for cyclists. It's a safe route for kids biking to school, seniors walking to the beach, residents running errands, and visitors exploring without a car. Mid-Beach currently has no continuous, protected north-south route for people on foot or by bike. This path is the fix the city already agreed to build.

Canceling a Priority 1 project also sets a precedent: that community-vetted planning decisions can be quietly reversed at any time, without notice or accountability. That precedent is as damaging as losing the path itself.

If this path is built

1st continuous protected north-south active route through Mid-Beach
P1 highest priority tier in the Bicycle-Pedestrian Master Plan
0 traffic fatalities — Miami Beach's Vision Zero commitment
04 — TAKE ACTION

Pick one. Do it now. Every voice counts before February 25.

2-minute talking points

  • This is a Priority 1 project in the city's own master plan — canceling it without a hearing undermines years of planning work.
  • No community input was sought before placing this on the consent agenda.
  • Consent agenda items receive no public discussion. A project of this scope deserves a proper vote with public comment.
  • Miami Beach has committed to Vision Zero and climate goals — canceling bike infrastructure moves us backward.
  • I urge you to pull this item and schedule a public hearing.

Dear Commissioner,

I am writing to urge you to remove the cancellation of the North Meridian Avenue Shared Use Path from the February 25 consent agenda and schedule a proper public hearing before any decision is made.

This project is a Priority 1 item in Miami Beach's own Bicycle-Pedestrian Master Plan. It has been years in the making and reflects a community commitment to safer, more connected streets. Canceling it without public notice or community input is not in keeping with the transparency our residents deserve.

Please give this project the public discussion it merits. I urge you to pull this item from the consent agenda.

Thank you for your service to our community.

Sincerely,
[YOUR NAME]
